About the profession
“Restorative medicine, sports medicine, exercise therapy, balneology and physiotherapy” is a comprehensive specialty that studies the mechanisms of action and develops methods of applying natural and artificial physical factors, physical exercises and other means of exercise therapy, traditional therapy factors that improve the effectiveness of preventive and therapeutic-rehabilitation measures for healthy people, sportsmen, patients and the disabled with the purpose of restoring functional reserves of the human body or compensating for lost functions and improving the level of health and quality of life of the population. Restorative medicine studies the patterns of processes of formation and preservation, restoration and strengthening of human health by means of dynamic assessment and correction of adaptive capabilities of a human organism, determines the methodological bases of disease prevention.
Sports medicine, including exercise therapy, studies the mechanisms of action of physical exercises and load on people engaged in physical activity and sports and on patients. It develops new diagnostic, treatment-preventive and recovery technologies, their use to improve the physical development and physical fitness of a person.
Balneology and physiotherapy study the mechanisms of action of natural and artificial physical factors and develop therapeutic and preventive technologies for their use, including in combination with traditional methods of treatment and biologically active substances of plant and animal origin. Specialists with higher medical, biological or psychological education, who wish to fulfill their intellectual potential in the field of fundamental science, choose postgraduate studies on the specialization “Restorative medicine, sports medicine, exercise therapy, balneology and physiotherapy”. PhD graduates acquire a full set of universal, general professional and professional competences that allow them to independently conduct research and teaching activities within the framework of this specialty.
Already in the first year of study, the students are intensively immersed into the specialty. In the process of training, postgraduate students study a full range of educational disciplines, undertake educational and on-the-job internships. Postgraduates, who successfully mastered the programme, present a scientific report on the main results of scientific work and pass the state examination as part of the state final certification, which allows them to receive a qualification “Researcher. Research Instructor” upon graduation.

During the training, postgraduate students undertake scientific-research and teaching internships and conduct scientific research as part of the thesis work under the supervision of professors of the department.
Having successfully mastered the educational programme, you will be able to conduct scientific research, teach major-specific and applied disciplines in Russian and foreign universities, will acquire professional competences in the creation, translation, abstracting, editing, examination of scientific publications of various types. The status of the expert will enable to hold key positions in educational, state and commercial organizations; continue to develop research activities. In scientific research activities, in the field of fundamental medicine the following tasks of professional activity are solved: fundamental research in the field of medicine, development and improvement of mathematical, physico-chemical (instrumental) methods of scientific analysis (in accordance with the specialization), applied research based on fundamental methods of analysis.
In the field of teaching activities on educational programmes of higher education: the development of training courses on the areas of professional activity, including based on results of the conducted theoretical and empirical research, including the preparation of methodological materials, teaching aids and textbooks; teaching disciplines upon higher education programmes in accordance with the specialization and performing teaching and guiding work on the areas of professional activity; conducting research in an educational organization, including the supervision of students’ research work.
