About the profession
Pharmacology, clinical pharmacology is a specialty that is characterized by the fact that its main methods of studying the interaction of medicinal products with living systems are both experimental (preclinical) and clinical studies among patients and healthy volunteers in compliance with ethical standards and with the use of modern methods of medicine, molecular biology, physiology, genetics, immunology, physics, chemistry and other related disciplines. The main directions of experimental pharmacology are the search for and development of new effective medicinal products for the prevention and treatment of various diseases, for the regulation of the functional state of organs and body systems, the study of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and metabolism of medicinal products, their interaction, the study of the mechanisms of action and manifestation of undesirable side effects, as well as the study of safety of potential medicinal products. Clinical pharmacology studies the efficacy and safety of medicinal products for a healthy and sick person, conducts drug monitoring, improves pharmacotherapy for various diseases in a clinic, studies pharmacogenetics. Specialists in the field of basic and medical sciences choose postgraduate studies "Pharmacology, clinical pharmacology" due to a wide range of opportunities to promote their professional growth. PhD graduates of the specialization "Pharmacology, clinical pharmacology" acquire a comprehensive set of general professional and professional competences that allow them to independently conduct research, consultative-organizational and teaching activities within the framework of this specialty.
Already in the first year of study, postgraduate students study intensively and seriously and begin to master the specialty. During the training, postgraduate students study a full range of educational disciplines and undertake educational and on-the-job internships in order to acquire the necessary qualification knowledge and competences. Postgraduate students, who successfully mastered the programme and reported on the main results of their scientific work, are provided with the opportunity to pass the state examination as part of the state final certification, which allows them to receive the qualification “Researcher. Research Instructor” upon graduation.
“Foreign Language”, “History and Philosophy of Science”, “Higher Education Pedagogy”, “Methodology of Scientific Research”, “Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology”, Undesirable Side Effects of Medicinal Products, Methods for their Prevention and Correction", "Pharmacoeconomic Studies of Curative and Preventive Drug Therapy", "Pharmacoepidemiological Studies of Drug Prescription”.
During the training, postgraduate students undertake scientific-research and teaching internships and conduct scientific research as part of the thesis work under the supervision of professors of the department.
Having successfully mastered all the disciplines of the educational programme, a PhD graduate can work as a doctor – a clinical pharmacologist in medical and research institutions, participate in preclinical and clinical research on the efficacy and acceptability of medicinal products, participate in making a decision on the conduct of clinical research together with the expert ethical committee, monitor the studies of various types, participate in the development of the formulary system of medicinal products, as well as conduct research, participate and organize conferences, congresses with the possibility of informing about the achievements in the development and implementation of new medicines with due account for their rationalized pharmacotherapy in Russian and foreign countries. The obtained qualification will allow teaching and developing methodological materials, manuals and textbooks according to the discipline profile in an educational organization, including the supervision of students' research work. This qualification will enable to hold key positions in educational, state and commercial organizations.
