About the profession
Comparison as a method of linguistic research which gave rise to historical linguistics and linguistic typology with their own methods. Nowadays these particular methods serve different fields of linguistic research with different linguistic material, and for specific purposes. Nonetheless, the methods of historical linguistics and linguistic typology spring from the comparative method, and the fields of historical linguistics and linguistic typology both deal with language systems that are comparable to some extent. Methodology and research procedures in both fields of research are different, but similar. Texts are only necessary to prove characteristics of the language systems under analysis. Both disciplines deal with several languages, so does the research. Another link between the two fields is correlation between the results of research and the possibility to prove the results in cross-sectional studies. These are the reasons that suggest combination of courses on historical linguistics and on linguistic typology in one programme.
Intensive immersion in the profession takes place already in the first year of the graduate school, while paying a special attention to comparative characteristics of phonetics, grammar and vocabulary of Germanic, Romance, and other languages, and conducting their comparative analysis. In what form will the languages exist in 15–20 years? After all, we are facing a constant process of language democratization, blurring of their standards, emergence of new “transitional” varieties. All these questions are carefully studied within the frame of the programme. Students will learn to analyze complex linguistic phenomena, evaluate and present relevant argumentation, obtain, select and collect relevant data using specific methods of linguistics.
All students are invited to take the opportunity and participate in international conferences on linguistics, present results of their original linguistic research at scientific seminars and submit papers to journals indexed with international databases.
Conducting seminars and practical classes, as well as lectures under the guidance or in the presence of professors and associate professors. Business games in the format of press conferences, webinars, conflict games, games for decision-making, computer simulation on the basis of business games help students understand the nuances of their future profession. Subject discussions, master classes of leading methodologists, participation in international competitions, interviews with potential employers, form future professional competencies.
Hands-on industry experience is a core part of every course. Our dedicated placement scheme offers the opportunity to gain teaching experience, apply for research project internships, and participate in our award-winning partnerships.
Students who have successfully completed the program may work at linguistic departments of Russian universities and other Russian institutions of High School either in Moscow or in Saint-Petersburg, be employed by or conduct research with Russian Academy of Sciences, collaborate with different universities in neighboring CIS countries and abroad.
