Program

“Global Security and Development Cooperation” is a truly transformative program, the MA has both global security and development cooperation stream. It provides a comprehensive academic foundation, complemented with on the ground field research. In the program, you will learn how and why major problems such as terrorism, poverty, environmental degradation, social inequality create an international framework in which security conflicts appear. This program introduces the core principles of international and global affairs in the areas of conflict (global security challenges) assessment, analysis and development of the programs contributing to conflict prevention and resolution, promoting stable and multipolar world; is aimed at improving understanding of complex issues, institutions and procedures related to security and development cooperation, as well as the creation of the professional skills required for a successful career of our graduates; will develop a deep understanding of the dynamics and trends that govern the global policy, as well as the ability to use this knowledge in different fields of your future career.

MA in IR is the best degree for those preparing for a diplomatic career, at the same time a degree in IR won’t just restrict your career to a government job. You will have plenty of non-government job opportunities to use this knowledge in fields as diverse as business; operational and analytical work; research centers associated with decision-making process and international issues; institutions of higher and secondary education systems.

Educational Process

Studies are done in accordance with the individual plan under supervision of the scientific advisor who should have a scientific degree and (or) title. The Master’s program presupposes active individual work of the student that is why classroom work should not exceed 14 hours a week (average during the whole period). Progress is checked during periodical attestations. Master’s thesis is an independent research paper made under the guidance of scientific advisor (with possible involvement of one or two consultants). The thesis is defended and final exams are taken publicly at the sitting of the State Attestation Commission.

Program includes 3 modules (stages) of international conflict policy analysis:

  • Module 1 is aimed at understanding of historical and structural antecedents of violent conflict and challenge to global security. (Global Security, International Terrorism, New Risks and Challenges, Energy Security)
  • Module 2 is aimed at mapping external responses, development policies and programs assessing impacts on Conflict and Peace. (International Conflicts: New Approaches to Settlement Process, International Organizations and Peace Process, Human Rights and Global Security, Migration and Global Security)
  • Module 3, is aimed at elaborating international strategies and options for conflict resolution taking into account different national interests of traditional and emerging Global powers, including BRICS countries.( Development Cooperation, Great and Emerging Powers, Foreign-Policy Process and Decision-Making, Megatrends and Global Affairs)

Practice

One of the most important forms of organization of the educational process is the practice-oriented nature of student training, as the activity of our department is designed to build up a new cadre of scholars, officials, internationally-oriented professionals for excellence, achievement, and leadership, capable of taking on leadership roles in international relations. Practice is held in governmental structures, Rossotrudnichestvo, Rosmolodezh, Roscosmos, Rosatom, the Chamber of Commerce, the UN Information Centre, Russian President's representative offices, embassies and the embassies of the CIS countries, and representative offices of foreign countries in the Russian Federation, etc.

Career

The Master in International Relations provides first-hand experience necessary for successful international careers. Professional activities of IR students include: a diplomat, an expert on international affairs analyst, international journalist, lawyer, economist, manager. Graduates of the department work in the central office of the Russian Foreign Ministry, embassies and Russian consulates in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, China, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Lebanon, Morocco in international organizations, commercial organizations, research centers, higher education institutions of Russia and foreign countries. Program graduates have employment opportunities in federal, state, and local governments, RUDN graduates are in high demand by employers in business and industry as well.
