About the profession

Heart failure is a disease, when the blood flow from the heart does not meet the needs of other organs. This disease is associated with actually reduced physical and psychological health, which manifests itself in a significant decrease in the quality of life. Heart failure is an irreversible condition of the body, it usually worsens over time. About 40 million people worldwide suffer from this disease. More than 2% of all older people have this diagnosis and this frequency reaches 6-10% among people over the age of 65. The disease is a heavy burden not only for each patient, but also for the health care system. For example, 2% of all costs of the national budget of the healthcare system of England are spent for its treatment, while the US healthcare system spends up to $35 million a year.

Training process

Starting from the first days of training, a postgraduate student masters the skills of diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart failure. Particular attention is paid to the development of diagnostic standards and treatment algorithms adopted throughout the world. During the preparation of the thesis work, the scientific research conducted by a postgraduate student is aimed at the implementation of the stated specific goal, which should be practically applicable in actual clinical practice.

The training process is based on such disciplines as “Internal Diseases” (with in-depth study of cardiology), “Clinical Pharmacology”, “Methodology of Scientific Research”, etc.

Internship

Students undertake the internship in the city emergency hospital, where there are multi-type patients and this allows gaining clinical experience in many cases of internal diseases. Training takes place both at points of care and in simulation classrooms. During the training a postgraduate student can master such practical skills as ECG recording, echocardiography, conducting functional tests, ultrasound of the lungs, etc.

Career

After having successfully mastered the programme and defended the thesis work, a postgraduate student is considered an expert in cardiology, possesses all the skills necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the modern world of medicine, in compliance with the worldwide accepted standards of care delivery. A postgraduate student can conduct independent research, which will be reflected, among other things, in research papers published in international journals. Currently, this is an essential skill of a modern doctor-researcher.
