About the profession

Genetics, which studies heredity and variability of organisms, is a young and dynamically developing science divided into a large number of specialized disciplines (cytogenetics, pharmacogenetics, population genetics, genetics of viruses, human genetics, etc.). However, all specialized genetic disciplines are based on fundamental scientific information, which is accumulated and systematized within the framework of general genetics. Medical genetics has been recently developing very actively; its task is to study the genetic foundations of human hereditary pathology. Modern genetics is characterized by the widespread use of molecular-genetic, biochemical, cytogenetic and other latest research methods. This led to significant progress in knowledge of human heredity and variability, including molecular mechanisms of genetic processes underlying the formation of normal and pathological signs. Scientific achievements in this field open up fundamentally new opportunities for solving a number of practical problems, primarily related to early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of hereditary diseases.

Training process

Already in the first year of study students are intensively immersed in the profession. At the current level postgraduate students study the structure and functions of nucleic acids, the expression of genetic information and its regulation, patterns of inheritance of genes and their cytological basis, methods of human genetics, human hereditary diseases and the principles of their diagnosis, prevention and treatment; acquire the competences necessary for conducting scientific research and implementing the educational process in educational institutions of higher education.


General Genetics, Methods of Studying Human Heredity, Human Hereditary Diseases, Molecular Basis of Human Heredity, Foreign Language (English), Russian as a Foreign Language, History and Philosophy of Science, Methodology of Scientific Research, Higher Education Pedagogy.


Postgraduate students undertake the scientific-research internship in the inter-departmental academic Laboratory of Molecular-Biological Research Methods. During the teaching internship postgraduate students teach a discipline "Biology" to students of the first year of study at the Institute of Medicine of RUDN University.


Having successfully mastered the educational programme, you will be able to conduct fundamental and applied genetic research, develop and improve the laboratory methods necessary for this.

In the sphere of teaching activities students learn to develop training courses, including based on the results of theoretical and empirical research; prepare methodical materials and textbooks; teach genetic disciplines in higher educational institutions; supervise students’ research work.
