About the profession

Clinical pharmacology today is a well-established discipline that allows significantly improving both qualitative and economic indicators of medical care. The programme is implemented with the use of various forms of training, including advanced electronic educational technologies, the possibility of mastering practical skills in a multidisciplinary hospital under the guidance of experienced specialists. The training of modern practical skills is supplemented by the course of simulation education. Combining pharmacology, pathophysiology and clinical disciplines into a whole is the main educational goal of clinical pharmacology, which is achieved in the training process.

Training process

The tasks of clinical pharmacology were determined 30 years ago by the World Health Organization (WHO): "To improve the health of patients by improving the safety and effectiveness of drug use". Clinical pharmacology eliminates the gap between drug manufacturers and clinicians, as it encompasses the pharmacological and clinical aspects of treatment. Since recently the activity of the pharmacological service is aimed at resolving the problems of drug therapy, rather than at performing the ordinary clinical work, the programme is aimed at training a highly qualified specialist and the most important aspect of his/her work is the clinical evaluation of medicinal products.

Internship

Medical residents are distributed to the units of the clinical sites of the department, where, under the guidance of professors of the department, they have the opportunity both to expand their knowledge and see its application in practice. Students analyze clinical events and this provides the opportunity to obtain a wealth of clinical experience during residency training.

Career

Looking to the future of clinical pharmacology, the importance of training young professionals should be emphasized. The lack of clinical pharmacologists, especially in the system of practical healthcare, will remain for a long time. Clinical pharmacologists are in demand in many fields of medicine: pharmaceutical industry, private medicine, insurance companies, public clinics, healthcare committees, drug control agencies. Upon completion of the residency programme, the students have the opportunity to enroll in the postgraduate programme on the specialization "Pharmacology, clinical pharmacology".
