About the profession
A specialist in cardiovascular surgery works in the following key areas: cardiac surgery and vascular surgery. This specialist corrects congenital and acquired defects, restores the patency of blood vessels clogged as a result of atherosclerosis, reconstructs the valvular apparatus of the heart and performs many other tasks. When performing operations on the heart and vessels, a surgeon of the relevant area closely interacts with all members of the operating team – a general surgeon, an anesthesiologist, a resuscitator. It may be necessary to cooperate with an arrhythmologist, whose competence includes the treatment of arrhythmic manifestations, which can arise as a result of the direct interference in the heart activity.
The educational programme on the specialization is developed for people with higher medical education, aimed at training highly qualified specialists in the field of diagnostics and surgical treatment of diseases and injuries of the heart, major vessels. These specialists treat such diseases as varicose veins of the lower extremities. When developing and implementing the residency programme, the educational organization is guided by a specific type of professional activity, for which a resident is trained, based on the needs of the labor market and logistical resources of the educational organization.
The training process consists of regular practical classes held in city hospitals, regional centers, hospitals. In addition, the curriculum includes lectures given to residents by outstanding specialists. The practical work of a resident consists in the assistance in operations, participation in consultations, the work in a polyclinic, participation in scientific conferences, keeping medical records, the performance of medical and diagnostic manipulations. The training of a resident is directly connected with his/her supervisors and fully corresponds to the work of a specialist. A resident has the opportunity to obtain basic skills in the disciplines at option: hybrid surgery, artificial and auxiliary blood circulation.
A graduate of the residency programme is a highly qualified specialist, who can apply modern high-tech methods of diagnosis and treatment and carry out therapeutic, diagnostic, research activities, engage in private medical practice. Upon graduation, a graduate receives a certificate of an X-ray endovascular surgeon and has the opportunity to get a job as an X-ray endovascular surgeon in city, community, district, regional hospitals and centers. Upon completion of the residency programme, the students have the opportunity to enroll in the postgraduate programme on the specialization “Cardiovascular surgery”, which will allow future specialists to hold key positions or engage in scientific activities.
